The Chicago Art Community Loses a Friend, Mentor, and Inspiring Leader

Mike Hawkins, a popular mentor for Digital Youth Network passed away yesterday. Although, I was not a close friend of Brother Mike’s I knew of him, had been in the audience watching him speak numerous times, and have been inspired by some of the people who he was a mentor and friend to.

I recently had a chance to attend a Chicago Fashion Event, where Brother Mike’s words on the Chi Renaissance motivated me and inspired me to live up to that idea,of a Chicago Renaissance. Prior to that, over the summer, I attended an art installation at Pilsen’s second Friday’s, and was inspired by his thoughts (which were turned into that installation) on revolution and the importance of mentoring. I want to post this video, as a tribute to somebody, who was an inspiration to teens and adults alike.

RIP Brother Mike
